Death walks

Death walked. It growled. It screamed triumphantly into the night. And it hunted...

Standing high above the undead horde, the dwarven warrior Luc and human barbarian Ragnar stared in disbelief at what had been the citizens of the besieged Brantis Hold. As the sun had set the two hundred humans who had welcomed them so warmly to the fortified village had lost their humanity, becoming undead fiends.

"That’s a lot of ghouls," the usually unflappable Luc said, his grip tightening around his throwing axe.

"Now I lay me down to sleep..."

Inside the inn, things weren’t any better.

The transformation of the humans caught the Blackrazors by surprise as they were getting ready to sleep. The ghouls inside the inn attacked them instantly from the hallway leading to their rooms. Cal, Greggor, Kannett pushed back the invaders while Aesop and Sven prepared a magical counterattack. Within minutes they pushed the ghouls from the second floor, and Aesop sealed the first level with a well-placed web spell.

Then, with the immediate threat defeated, they started to tackle their next challenge: how to get out of the inn.

Help arrives

Savage howls of the enraged ghouls filled the air as the creatures tried to break into the inn and were thwarted by Aesop’s web. They took out their frustrations on the poor, mad cleric, who was the only human who hadn’t been transformed.

At that moment, as Luc and Ragnar turned to face the ghouls threatening them on the hold’s fortified walls, help arrived. Fulgar and Aaron Windstalker, using fly spells, soared over the city’s walls and began attacking the undead monsters with a barrage of magic. Luc leapt down from the wall and began carving his way through the hordes on the hold’s floor while Ragnar fought the ghouls who tried to trap him on the catwalk running around the inside of the city walls. Fulgar, using his view of the battle field to his advantage, cast levitate to raise the cleric to safety. He then launched a volley of fire-based spells to destroy the creatures.

A way out

There were no windows on the second floor of the inn, and certainly no doors. But there was a roof.

The party climbed up onto the rafters and began hacking their way through the thick, water-logged thatch of the roof. A few minutes later they were up and through – Kannett and Greggor leapt from the building to the city wall catwalk and began to attack the ghouls outside of the building. Meanwhile, the others began to boost themselves onto the steeply pitched roof, only to find that the ghouls from below had worked their way on to the catwalk and were jumping onto the roof. Realizing that their position was untenable, Cal and Aesop retreated back into the building, where they could fight their opponents on level ground.

Ashes to ashes=

It took a total of 15 minutes for the Blackrazors to run through the ghoulish ranks, ravaging them with steel and magic. When the ghouls were defeated, the adventurers began creating great piles of the foul creatures, which they then ignited. As the pyres burned brighter, the party looked at the strange, crazed cleric they had rescued, heard the sounds of the undead milling around outside the city walls, and wondered what to do next.
