What Has Come Before

To save a ward of the Mudsitters District from a vile, corrupting toxin, the Dark City heroes have ventured to the subterrean wilderness of the Southern Arc. There they seek the lair of a dark naga, who's tongue is needed to create the antidote that the Mudsitters to need. One of their number, their dwarven guide Thargo Stoneshield, has already fallen on the expedition and they now stand at the door to the naga's inner sanctum.

The Stone Door

The party presses on further into the troglodyte lair, but are stopped cold by a huge stone door that they can not easily open (their rogue guide having been killed earlier in the fight with the gargoyles). After Corash casts enlarge on Fawkes, and with the help of Thom and Kerth, they are able to force the door open.

The Stinking Ambush

Moving forward, they find a diamond-shaped room; Kerth sees into the shadows and notices four troglodytes hiding in the corners. Fawkes advances, seeking to draw them out, but fumbles his attack. The melee ensues, with Thom becoming sickened as he advances, showing "if you kill them, I think they stop stinking!"

In the Lair of the Dark Naga

Party smashes their way through an iron door, breaking it open but triggering a shower of darts. They advance and Fawkes and Kerth looking to a large room with a huge kobold statue. When Corash joins them, they are slammed by a lightening bolt that erupts from the statue. The mage falls, scorched, and his owl explodes in a burst of feathers.

Kerth falls back and heals the wizard. The elf stumbles forward, and fires a fireball at the statue, badly burning the naga. The creature lashes out with another lightening bolt, again causing the mage to once again fall. Sir Fawkes grabs the wizard, pulling him back around the bend where he heals himself with the divine power of Wee Jas. "I'm still slightly unconscious." -- Corash

Corash, once again revived by Kerth, casts fly on the paladin, while Kerth shields himself with sanctuary. Sir Fawkes then picks up Kerth and flies into the room, skirting past caltrops scattered on the floor. As he does so, the naga once again hits the pair with lightning, frying the cleric who falls unconscious. The paladin closes, dropping the cleric, and then noticing there were actually two nagas on the statue. He strikes the one on the left, but his blade passes through it harmlessly. Calling upon his arcane training in the church, he realizes the naga he'd attacked was an illusion.

"If only I hadn't blown that gust of wind fighting that monkey" -- Corash.

Thom, seeing Kerth, nervously advances. He starts picking his way through the caltrops while Corash steps up behind him and throws his golden lions past the trapped floor, where they land.

The naga attempts to blast the party with a lightning bolt again, but fails, its spell sputtering out. Fawkes attacks, but his blade slices through empty space, revealing that the creature is displaced.

Corash summons a flaming sphere which he bounces at the naga, but it misses. The naga launches a ray of enfeeblement at the paladin, sapping his strength. He tries to attack counter attack, but his weakened blow misses the displaced creature. Thom runs forward, and casts cure light wounds on Kerth, bringing him back to the land of the living.

Corash directs his flaming sphere to bounce attack again, but misses. Both lions climb the statue and start attacking the naga, but their claws miss. The mage thinks about retreating, but instead fires magic missile at the naga, which slams into an invisible shield.

The naga lashes out with its stinger, hitting Sir Fawkes and sending poison pumping into his veins, which the paladin resists. Meanwhile, its illusionary self fades from view. Fawkes strikes back, hitting the creature badly. Kerth sacrifices his nimbus of light, scorching the naga. Corash hurls his burning sphere at the creature, burning it. Then a lion rips the naga's throat out, killing it.

They then secure the naga's treasure, find two rooms with dead kobolds in them, and then determine how to cause the statue to slide out of place, revealing a small horde of gold and silver coins.

Corash, distraught over the loss of his familiar Nightwing, is staggered and disoriented, as though he lost a bit of himself in the death.
