The Rusty Axes –- also known as the Bloody Axes -- were a brutal street gang that lurked on the periphery of Obsidian Bay’s criminal scene until the start of the Ulek War in CY 591, when large numbers of Domain troops were deployed to fronts on the Pomarj and the Principality of Ulek, leaving fewer law-abiding (and more importantly, law-enforcing) citizens in the city.

Overview

City: Obsidian Bay Country: Domain of Obsidian Bay Leader: N/A Roster: 30 The Rusty Axes –- also known as the Bloody Axes -- were a brutal street gang that lurked on the periphery of Obsidian Bay’s criminal scene until the start of the Ulek War in CY 591, when large numbers of Domain troops were deployed to fronts on the Pomarj and the Principality of Ulek, leaving fewer law-abiding (and more importantly, law-enforcing) citizens in the city.

The gang was made up of worshipers of Erythnul, the god of murder and mayhem. As befit its nature, the gang is was extremely chaotic, ruthless and decentralized. It was comprised of several small factions led by one particular faction which is even more brutal and stronger than the rest. The leader of this strongest band was known as simply the Chaosbringer, a cleric/barbarian of exceptional strength.

The groups roamed the city looking for targets, and each has its own small lair secreted into the sewers. There was no central lair, and very little communication among the groups save when one runs into another. At this times, messages from Chaosbringer were sent on to the others; those who ignore such orders (usually simple ones like “avoid the Wharf District”) risked being hunted down and killed by the leader.

The smaller bands had the same modus operandi. They circulated at night, usually in the Strange, Mudsitters or Wharf Districts. They tended to hunt the same area for 1d3 nights, staying long enough to strike terror, but never enough for the city guard to be able to saturate the area. They typically left several days between their killing sprees.

The Rusty Axes met their end at the hands of a band of heroes led by the half-orc monk Prug, who confronted their leader in the Low Market of the Mudsitters District. The fight occurred after the Rusty Axes massacred a patrol of the City Guard in the Wharf District in a bid to attract the attention of Prug and his allies. It worked, but not to their advantage: the half-orc and his friends were able to confront and kill the mad serial killer, effectively ending the reign of the Axes in the city.
