The Saga

Fireseek 1, 592

Party shows up in Sigil, the city of doors. “Greeted” by a grim, gruff man named Zilanderan from the Obsidian tower. He seems rather certain of his reality being the prime material plane. He bullies the party into working for him, and takes them to the room of portals.

Asks the party to travel to Fierth, to look into a red dragon who might be leading armies. Kobold army is working for the red dragon. Party should head to Azra, one of the surviving cities of this plane. A path to the west will lead to the city. But the party only has seven days before the portal is closed.

Party enters the portal taking damage from the flames. We see a set of mountains that may have once been snowcapped, but are now baren. The “crystalmysts”, and they are smoke-topped. Party heads west to Azra.

On the way they run into a fire from what seems to be something burning. Find kobold and skeleton tracks around some burned wagons. Push on to the city. Note that it’s hot, but Thrax feels slightly at home.

As the party walks along, they are surprised! As Gaven falls into a pit trap, he catches himself with his acrobatics negating any falling damage. Unfortunately there is also a scorpion waiting at the bottom. Kobolds then attack, bursting out of the dunes. Haagalaz fires his crossbow at a kobold, misses then engages it. The javelin throwers flank and damage Haagalaz and Thrax. Gaven faces off with the scorpion striking it solidly. The two slinging kobolds then fire at Haaglaz and Thrax. They miss Thrax but Haagalaz ends up on fire. In the pit the scorpion grabs gaven, despite his Halfling luck. Thrax meanwhile yells in draconic “Beware my draconic wrath”. After moving he fires his thunderwave at the two kobolds who attacked him, then turns and breaths on one of the kobolds attacking Haagalaz. He then yells “behold my power!” The kobolds question, their leaders, but are told to press on.

Haagalaz attacks the kobold but misses. Gaven breaks free, but the scorpion to reactively stung, poisoning him. The slingers go, but both miss their targets. The scorpion attacks gaven again, striking with his stinger again. Then Thrax fells another kobold and checks on Gaven.

Haagalaz fires his crossbow, striking a slinger. The last javelin kobold strikes Haagalaz. In the pit Gaven calls on his inner power regaining his composure, then strikes at the scorpion. The slingers attack, but miss, as well as the scorpion. Thrax tries to freeze the scorpion but misses. He then calls on fate to allow him to also cast a magic missile, felling the scorpion. Haagalaz then inspires Gaven to focus, and he regains further strength. He then strikes and fells the final javelin kobold and chases down one of the slingers. The slingers fire down, hitting both Thrax and Haagalaz. Thrax misses with a missile.

Haagalaz smacks the kobold, and sweeps him to his feet. Gaven readies a shrunken in case he sees something. The slinger hits Thrax with a bullet, igniting him on fire, while the other attempts to stand giving Haagalaz an opening. Thrax then returns the strike with a missile. Meanwhile Haagalaz fells his kobold. In the pit, Gaven is starting to feel a bit woozy from the poison. Thrax gets hit once again, putting him under. Haagalaz then inspires Thrax to wake up, bringing him to his feet. After the kobold misses, he takes off and Thrax fells the kobold in mid stride.

Haagalaz and Thrax stop Gaven from bleeding, and the party licks their wounds. They check the kobolds for any goods. The party finds a masterwork scimitar inlayed with gold on the back, and an eagle claw holding an emerald, among some other mundane items. After Thrax grabs the scimitar and Gaven a few minor items, the party then moves on.

Fireseek 2, 592

As night sets, the party is guided by the light of the ring. Suddenly Haagalaz hears a grating sound. Gaven runs up a nearby dune to scout around. He views a few skeletons rising from the sand. As they discuss what to do, they hear some further skeletons moving in the distance. Gaven scouts ahead finding 10 or so skeletons, two wearing eagle helmets, and one apparently driving them with some sort of whip. Several times throughout the night they avoid encounters with skeletons. Seems ancient armies are rising from the dead to continue its battle.

As dawn arises they finally arrive at the city. Unfortunately the skeletons have noticed them. At the gates they are stopped by the guards who will not let them in during the night. They turn to face the oncoming skeletons.

The skeleton leaders advance. Thrax and Gaven both attempt to strike the leaders, but fail. The other skeletons fall in behind their leaders. Haagalaz charges one group of skeletons, and their leader tries to strike him, but the blade spins in his hands. The other leader moves up to Thrax, who responds with a Thunderwave, then pulls out his orb. Gaven tries to aid Thrax, but fails. The skeletons advance, and two attack Haagalaz drawing blood. Haagalaz responds by smacking and knocking over the leader, who returns the blow. The other leader strikes Thrax, who returns a thunderwave, moving the leader allowing thrax to focus his dragon’s breath on the other skeletons. Gaven tries to strike the leader, but is instead surrounded by skeletons. Haagalaz then menaces the skeleton leader, only to get a blow in return. Gaven then takes another strike. Thrax casts Freezing Cloud on a group of skeletons felling one. Suddenly the sun rises, and the skeletons fade back into the sand.

Party is finally invited into the city, and gains an apology. They are told to seek out Zorgar the shiek. They are accompanied by two guards due to the dragonborn, and are taken to the shiek. At first the shiek is skeptical of the dragonborn, but the party convinces him to believe them. The shiek reveals that the script on the sword is “the vicious one”. Dragons have not been seen in centuries. Six months ago the red dragon showed up, as well as it’s kobold armies. They appeared to have all come from the burning tree. They seem to be coming from the mountains, including possible lava flows. The party asks if there are any legends that may be linked to the dragons coming. Perhaps they reveal something about this army. The Shiek does not wish to tell, until Gaven comes up with a story about Halflings and their luck. This convinces the Shiek that Halflings will not be affected by curses and he tells them of a possible portal to a plane of fire.

He then reveals that the skeletons have only just risen 4 weeks ago. They are the armies of the Baklunish and Suel, who fought and destroyed the world. He then speaks of his advisor who is sick. He doesn’t quite want to talk about this, but Gaven convinces him otherwise. He motions for the guard to leave, and informs the party that the oasis is weakening with the advisor. He gives a writ to talk with the advisor.

Party stays at the Golden Cobra as the Shiek’s guests. They then use their writ to speak with the advisor. They find that he’s dying because he is a druid. He says even the creatures of the desert are dying. Death is taking over. The chaos storm is squeezing the world of life. The party notices he has burn lines all over his body, converging to a single spot. They ask, and he reveals it is the heart of the mountain. Thrax theorizes that all this could be due to laylines which are being corrupted by the portal to the plane of fire. The party then gets ready to rest.
