The Maidens of the Shield are a newly formed group of female warriors who worship the goddess Mayaheine.

Overview

The Maidens of the Shield are a newly formed group of female warriors who worship the goddess Mayaheine. Some are widows, their husbands having died in the various wars that have swept The Pomarj, while others are daughters, aunts or sisters of those who were slain. A number are also adventurers, who gave up their ties to other guilds to serve Mayaheine’s holy cause.

The maidens are the first followers of Mayaheine to organize in Obsidian Bay, although there have been a handful of faithful in the city just before the Greyhawk Wars. When asked how they came to find one another, the most of the Maidens will credit a vision granted to them by their goddess which directed them to travel to Obsidian Bay and seek out the woman who would become their leader: Shadora Brelwen (Cmr1/Pal6) the widow of a baker killed during the Fall of Obsidian Bay.

Shadora had spent the previous three years, from the city’s fall to its liberation, following a series of prophetic dreams sent by Mayaheine. They directed her to seek training from the Church of Pelor in Blue, and then directed her to gather together two other women: Zamara (Cm1/Sor5), who’s husband fought and died in the Battle of Blue and Nemtia (Cmr1/Clr4). Together they traveled the Great Southern Plain, helping villagers organize defenses against the rampaging humanoids, training them in the ways of self defense and offering what healing they could.

Finally Shadora turned to Obsidian Bay, where she used coin and treasure accumulated during the last two years to purchase three small neighboring houses in the Mudsitters District. It is these buildings that the new Maidens have sought out, and it is there where they have begun to receive martial and religious training.

The Maidens now number a little over a two-dozen women, with a few more joining every month. A prominent new recruit is Koronia Sethowen (Ftr1/Rog3), who has been leading the Maidens' investigation into the Followers of the Earth Dragon.
