Overview

Jakob Dworkin is a long-wandering, much-storied follower of Dalt, the ancient (and nearly forgotten) Suel god of keys and portals. Born in Irongate, Jakob was obsessed with passageways and tunnels from an early age, and spent much of his childhood exploring the sewers beneath the great dwarven city. In doing so, he discovered all manner of secret passages and tunnels, much to the ire (and eventual respect) of some of the city’s most-expert dwarven stonemasons.

Eventually his subterranean wanderings caused him to stumble across the secret lair of the city’s clandestine Thieves Guild, a find that caused him to flee the city in search of safer lands. He spent considerable time in Greyhawk, training with the Thieves Guild there and eventually taking part in a disastrous expedition to Castle Greyhawk with a handful of recruits (an expedition most definitely not condoned by the master of apprentices). Most of his party was killed by a band of spear-wielding skeletons that exploded with negative energy when destroyed and only he and two friends, Darren and Yalturn, managed to escape by slipping through a magical portal Jakob had miraculously uncovered.

The passage led to a small altar to the forgotten god, where Jakob found a small bronze key hanging upon a hook. He picked up the key and was suddenly plunged into a staggeringly large mental maze filled with all manner of twisting corridors, cunning traps, and hidden doorways. After spending days navigating the labyrinth, he reached its center, where he found a bronze-lined corridor. Stepping through it returned him to the real world … where his hand had just completed grasping the bronze key.

Dworkin carries with him – in a tome whose pages far out number its apparent width – an exhaustive collection of every item, bit of information, and scrap of illustration that he has managed to find. The _Atlas of Doors_, as he has come to call it, is a tremendous resource that he has spent many an hour maintaining, reading and re-reading. (This item grants him a +1 insight bonus to all Knowledge (Dungeoneering), Knowledge (History) and Knowledge (Geography) checks he makes (assuming he has it in hand).

It was during one of these review sessions that he realized that more than a few of his entries referred to Obsidian Bay, especially to planar travel to and from the city and the peninsula around it. When he overheard a bit of gossip about the Blackrazor Guild having a portal to the Abyss in their basement, he immediately booked passage to the city. He interviewed with the guild’s leader, Malphas, who recognized his expertise and his potential as a “field scribe”, complementing George Fillerman’s already impressive abilities. The master delver consulted with George on the expedition to Maure Castle, but was unable to undertake it because of a previously planned scouting expedition to the Drachensgrab Hills. Upon his return, and learning of the troubles that the group has encountered, he convinced Malphas to allow him to join the Maure expedition.

After several expeditions to Maure Castle, he took on the mantle of Master of Delvers for the Blackrazor Guild.
