Overview

Obsidian Bay has hundreds of street lights – most of them lit by oil, but a few by magical spells – and someone must tend them. And all of these someones belong to one guild – the Lamplighters.

The guild was formed in CY 580 when a number of the city’s lamplighters united behind Quarren "Brightflame" Conner (Rouge 13) to fight against a roaming band of street thugs. Quarren was once a thief before turning to the more laid-back lifestyle of a lamplighter. He has truly given up his thieving ways - after his adventures as a youth he is more than happy to sit back and spend his retirement tending to the city's lights. He is fiercely protective of the guild he founded and the city he calls home.

The guild is paid a respectable sum to make sure the lights are well-tended, but they have a more subtle skill: eavesdropping. In the course of their duties the Lamplighters' overhear a great deal of conversations - those in the know often turn to them for tidbits of information. Such tidbits provide the guild members with a small, but helpful, stream of revenue. The guild helped the Griffins Guild uncover the Professionals Guild's first attempt to overthrow the city, and is credited with unearthing a number of other nasty conspiracies.

The guild is not a gaggle of tattle-tales; they do not report every misdeed, rumor or rambling they hear. They screen their information and pass along only the gems – the guild members realize if they flood the city with useless or low-quality information, the value of that information will decrease even as their enemies increase.

Publicly the guild is known to have reported certain crimes and conspiracy to city’s governments, but they are looked upon as heroes, rather than rats. Rather than being linked with any one group, alliances in the guild are mostly on a personal basis – each guild member has a network of contacts and associates that he or she deals with in a regular basis.

As one might expect, the Lamplighters gained more than a few enemies over the years, but these are – for the most part – individual enemies. The guild as a whole is too important to too many groups and powerful people for it to be destroyed. Individuals looking for revenge against guild members can expect to go up against not only that person, but the entire guild and that person’s close associates as well. Those who do go up against a guild member usually do so because they are either ignorant of the consequences or overwhelmingly enraged by something a Lamplighter said.

Prior to its disbanding, the Professionals Guild was a major antagonist of the guild. One of the reasons Conner left the Professionals was the growing presence of evil within its ranks. He founded the guild – in part – to counter the thieves increasingly dark intentions. Now that the guild has been re-formed (and possibly reformed), Quarren is on the watch for any possible slip-ups on its part.

Quarren also despises the Scarlet Brotherhood, and is constantly using his people to gather information about the Brotherhood’s actions in the city. This worked against him prior to the Fall of Obsidian Bay when the Brotherhood successfully fed him (and the Blackrazor Guild as well) misinformation about the impending invasion.
