Five years ago, Kolborg was a 12-year-old boy, youthful, happy and content to work the fields of his family farm alongside his dad and older brothers.
Then war returned to The Pomarj. Unlike the Greyhawk Wars of a few years earlier which saw a series of battles outside of Obsidian Bay, as well as the annexation of Blue by the larger city-state, this war threatened his home directly. The forces of the Scarlet Brotherhood allied with the nefarious former members of Obsidian Bay’s thieves guild to overthrow the Free City, forcing its government into exile in Blue. That in turn brought down the full wrath of the humanoids on his lands as the Army of Burning Glory, led by the pyromancer Weri, swept down out of Highport to burn the city from the peninsula.
His father and brothers joined the militia defending the city, joining the Obsidian Bay Expeditionary Force under General Stephan Warrick when it road out to fight Weri’s legions. Defying his father’s stern orders, Kolborg followed the army into the field, serving as a water boy in its rear ranks.
It was not the Army of Burning Glory that killed his family though. It wasn’t the Weri who burned the flesh from their bones, searing any hopes Kolborg ones had for a pleasant life after the war.
It was Falgar.
The insane Blackrazor betrayed the men under him, incinerating dozens of Obsidian Bay and Blue soldiers. Kolborg saw them die with his own eyes, having snuck up to the front lines when word came that the Blackrazor Guild, Ralleymen and Orcslayers had engaged the enemy. He watched as the crazed mage laughed maniacally, unleashing an inferno that slew Kolborg’s father and brothers.
Afterwards, they said that the mage had fallen under the sway of an evil artifact. That he wasn’t to blame for what happened. They gave him a medal, and he tried to buy off the city by building an orphanage for the children of the men that the mage had killed. For kids lie Kolborg.
They put him there, and the Cuthbertians who ran it tried to teach him patience. They tried to sooth his rage. They tried to explain how St. Cuthbert had a plan, how diligence, fortitude and hard work would make everything right with the world again.
He took their message to heart, but not in the way he intended. On his 13th birthday, he fled the orphanage and took to the streets. He lived hand to mouth as a beggar while simultaneously learning the cruder arts of thuggery and burglary. He was a determined, diligent student, and as he grew older, he learned how to stalk a man unseen, as well as other, more brutal talents.
He worked at it as a master tradesmen works at his art, forging a weapon he would aim at the only target who counted.
Falgar.
