Esseni is a self-absorbed mage fanatically obsessed with crafting magical devices and constructs.

Overview

Esseni (Hum, Wiz14) is a self-absorbed mage fanatically obsessed with crafting magical devices and constructs. He maintains a heavily-fortified residence in the strange quarter that is protected by all manner of magical wards and (allegedly) extraplanar guardians. He is a rude, angry old man who constantly berates his visitor’s intelligence, interrupts them mid-sentence, and then rails against them for failing to tell him what he needs to know. He appears to be a man old before his time, with thinning grey hair and pale white skin. He wears dark red robes highlighted with bands of black and orange.

His major domo is a half-golem named Ratrold (Half-golem, Ftr3), and it is this creation that most of his visitors encounter first. The creature – few would call him human – had his right arm and leg cut off by a particularly fiendish trap while adventuring in the Obsidian Maze. He sought out Esseni, who agreed to make him whole again by grafting newly-dead flesh to him and then animating it. The process made him far stronger, but also dulled his wits considerably.

He is a miserable creature whose few pleasures come from tormenting those who wish to see his master. He will demand to know what they want, when they want it, and how much gold they are willing to pay, all the will cursing and spitting derisively. The construct wears black chainmail, gauntlets, and skullcap. An impressive-looking bastard sword hangs from his hip.
