Sellsword Guild

Overview

The Sellswords are a cutthroat mercenary guild located in the Wharf District.

Operating out of a warehouse leased to them by their sponsors, the Darksea Guild, the guild is primarily known for offering protection services -- escorting caravans, supplementing trade ships, and guarding private property.

They hail from the Kingdom of Ahlissa, where they maintain offices in several different cities. Little of their dealings in that land are known of in Obsidian Bay, though the rumors say that there's little the guild wouldn't do to make a quick gold piece.

In Obsidian Bay, they have won a few contracts from shipping companies in the Wharf District, and seem let the Darksea Guild provide them with the majority of their work. Most of this work involves guarding guild property.

The Sellswords have about 120 members, and their hiring standards are already notoriously low -- they'll basically hire anyone with a strong arm who's capable of wielding a club … and isn't to concerned about who they hit with it.

Guild Master Derach Wailhorne was a careful, manipulative guildmaster whose suave persona stands in sharp contrast to the common members of his guild. Before his death, Wailhorne was responsible for all negotiations with businesses and other organizations, as well as communication with his masters in the Darksea Guild. Unfortunately for the guild, he was killed by the shadow-demon-possessed Gaiseric in CY 591.

Assistant Guild Master Andath Kithpold is a crass, brutal thug of a man who had been responsible for overseeing the guild's roster, but now serves as the guild's master. Although he appears hulkish, he's shown himself to be remarkably light on his feet, and is rumored to be able to catch a guild member muttering a disparaging word about the guild master from across a crowded hall. It's unknown whether he'll continue to rule the guild, or whether his less-than-diplomatic nature will cause his Darksea masters to replace him with someone more charismatic.

The guild's primary ally in the city is the Darksea Guild, who hire them for a variety of tasks.

They have few enemies as of yet, but are on bad terms with the Strongarm Guild; the Darksea Guild had relied on the Strongarms for muscle until the Sellswords arrived in the city.

Alhissan Roots

More extensive knowledge (DC Check 25): In Alhissa, they are known as unscrupulous competitors who rely on all manner of lawful and unlawful tactics to secure business. The more lawful of their tactics includes undercutting competitors pricing, forcing businesses to sign exclusive contracts with them, and using political influence to force their competitors out of business. Its dirtier tactics -- all rumored, none confirmed -- include burning the buildings of competitors, staging raids against caravans guarded by other companies, and intimidating businesses in to paying them for protection services.

In each of its foreign cities, the guild is always careful to secure the backing of a powerful organization, insuring that they are not punished too severely (if at all) for their indiscretions. In other cities, they have allied themselves with the Church of Hextor, the Canter Guild and other organizations of power; they prefer the backing of a group rather than an individual, viewing such backing as more stable than that of a noble lord. A lord can be assassinated, but groups are hard to destroy.

There is no evidence yet that the guild is resorting to its old habits in Obsidian Bay; they seem to be content with their half-dozen odd contracts and the Darksea Guild's business. However, they've been in the city for less than a month, so who knows what the future holds?
