Vargas of Ralsand, House Garasteth is an aristocrat, swordsman and apprentice of the Shadow arts

Overview

Vargas of Ralsand is a young noble, a scion of the celestial House of Garasteth. He grew up in the court of his uncle, Prince Valeran of Ralsand, which is a minor holding in the newly created Principality of Innspa within the larger United Kingdom of Ahlissa. The Aerdy’s House of Garasteth is well known throughout the Flanaess for its arcane legacy, and less for its territorial holdings. Thus, the House claims many mages and sages amongst its number, and most of its members have at least some arcane background and schooling.

This is certainly true for Vargas, who gained a rudimentary training in the arcane arts, as well as several other scholarly subjects, in the City of Greyhawk. He was sent to that city for schooling as a young boy to be kept safe from the intrigues and uncertainties in his homeland, starting with the Greyhawk Wars in 582 CY when he was but eleven. He was enrolled at a boarding school for young nobles and the children of wealthy merchant families, and later continued to the finest finishing schools and finally to Grey College itself.

During his first years in Greyhawk City, his family assigned him a guardian to protect the boy from the depredations of rival Aerdy Houses, mainly assassination attempts or kidnappers from holding the boy for ransom. Once Vargas reached his later teen years, such fears lessened, and he was granted greater freedom and independence. At first he resented having been assigned a guardian, and found it great sport to try and hide from them, and lose them in the crowded streets of Greyhawk City. Later, however, he came to appreciate their presence, since he got himself into more than one situation that he would have had trouble getting out of on his own.

During his many years away at various schools, Vargas has grown bored of his mundane studies, and hungers for further arcane knowledge. More than anything else, he seeks the excitement of real adventures befitting a young man of his age. Vargas recently traveled to Obsidian Bay in hopes of apprenticing himself to a respectable wizard, or perhaps trying his hand as a rogue (under a nom de guerre, of course), or maybe even improving his fencing skills. He knows from his successes at both sports and academics while at school that he is a young man of great promise and potential, and yearns to find something that he can excel at and make a name for himself instead of simply returning to Ahlissa for the rigid life of the Aerdy noble courts.

Since arriving in Obsidian Bay, Vargas has apprenticed himself to the shadowmancer Saheed Darksteel of the Guild of Wizardry. He has organized a failed expedition to the long-lost Sidewinder Pass and helped in the defeat of the gang of murderers known as the Bloody Axes.
