What Has Come Before

After participating in a war game reenactment of the Battle of Waterton Meadows, the Blackrazors learn from their guildmaster that they have a new job: protect a former Greyhawk judge from his old enemies.

The Saga

2nd of Planting, C.Y. 587

The senior members of the Blackrazors were rudely awakened from their well-deserved rest by one of Guildmaster Damaculas's runners early on 2nd. After assembling in the Guildmaster's office, they were informed that business was booming and that the guild had two jobs.

The first job -- which Damaculas viewed as the more important of the two -- involved guarding a shipment of exceptionally valuable merchandise arriving down at the Ostland Shipyards. He decided to dispatch Kalib and Killian down to the docks with a contingent of the lesser Blackrazors. He ordered Fulgar and Luc to take over the garrison duties at the guild's brewery outside of the city. Finally he told Greggor, Aaron, Sven, Aesop and Tanevir to take a small contingent of the guild's lower level adventurers to guard a "paranoid" ex-judge of the Free City of Greyhawk.

This "crazy" man, thought that one of the men whom he had sentenced to die was going to come back from beyond the grave to kill him. He wanted to pay the Blackrazors 2,000 gold to protect him at his country estate. Damaculas obviously viewed it as a milk run.

The party, while preparing for their adventure, couldn’t help but notice the tension running through the guild hall. The 60-odd members of the guild seemed to have divided into three camps. The largest followed Damaculas, the second largest following the adventurers, and the third undecided about how to follow. Later that day, the Blackrazors arrived at the large farm house to find that the servants were in the process of leaving. They went inside and met Porthos, who introduced himself as a former junior judge of Greyhawk and explained -- in brief -- that a man he'd sentenced to die had returned from the dead. This individual had already killed the other junior judge involved in the sentencing, and was now looking for him.

The party was skeptical -- why had Porthos left Greyhawk? Why didn't he call upon the city guard to protect him? At first he refused to answer but after the Blackrazors threatened to leave he told them that he had left the city after certain allegations had arisen involving corrupt judgeships. He denied any wrong doing however and as the party was about to press him, the first "attack" occurred.

Gnolls streamed into the building, but were handily defeated by the 'razors. An hour later, ghouls attacked. This time it was slightly harder to repel the attack, but the party was triumphant. Another hour passed, and this time two hydras attacked, smashing into the farm house with unnatural speed. They had just succeeded in slaying the creatures when a gigantic mastodon thundered through one of the doors to the manor, knocking the 'razors out of the way in its zest to attack Porthos.

It succeeded and the former judge died. As Porthos succumbed to his wounds Tanevir cast dispel magic which forced it to revert to a small figurine. Soon after that attack, the killer himself -- some sort of bizarre shadow mage -- appeared. He demanded Porthos' body, which the adventurers had succeeded in stuffing into their bag of holding. They refused to turn it over, and the mage attack, nearly killing several members of the party before withdrawing form combat. After withdrawing from the battle he cast some sort of spell that allowed him to pull the body from the bag and escape into the night.

The stunned Blackrazors were left standing in an abandoned, badly damaged house with their mission in tatters. Why had they been sent on a mission where they were so clearly outclassed? Why were their best warriors and mages sent to guard a boat and beer rather than fight such a powerful enemy?

Was Damaculas trying to get them -- and their followers -- killed? With that question on their minds, they made their way back to the city, arriving on the 3rd of Planting.
