The Saga

Flocktime 19, CY 586

The Cold Deat

The party -- after having forced Lewandrew's apprentices on the first floor into retreat -- decided to pull back into the Chamber of Light. Since the actual chamber was too hot and bright for them to rest in, the party decided to put a contingent on guard duty while the rest slept via the nap spell – safe beyond a curtain of darkness Malphas -- in a fit of inspiration -- decided to booby trap one end of the corridor with bags of stale flour. But the traps, trigged by a floor-based trip-wire, were useless against the creatures Separious sent against them – cold deaths. The negative energy constructs savaged the guards, dropping several of them before the Anders, one of the party’s recruits, could raise Malphas. The party then managed to defeat the creations, which brutally ravaged Ragnar and the rest of the guards. During the fight the party noticed that holy water, when thrown against the creatures, frozen and dropped to the floor, taking a portion of the creatures with it.

The party, paranoid and tired, retreated in the Chamber of Light, closing the secret door behind them. There they rested – albeit uncomfortably – for more than eight hours while more of Separious’s undead servants filled the outside corridor.

Flocktime 20, CY 586

Finally rested – and one day (the 20th of Flocktime after they had returned to the Obsidian Maze – the party knowing that the undead could not stand the light, pulled a mirror from their bag of almost everything.

When Ragnar the door, Malphas and Cal used its used its powerful beam to burn an opening in their ranks. The party quickly defeated the creatures, sending a number of their bodies down into the gravity pit.

The party then moved to the first level Chapel of the Cult of Death Undying. The chapel, with its silenced chamber and crystal skull standing watch over it, was guarded by four razorback skeletons. The party narrowly defeated the creatures, attempting to move shatter the crystal skull in the process.

The attack on the skull – a powerful magic item associated with Nurell – failed miserably, and worse, triggered a trap elsewhere in the dungeon as a massive earthquake collapsed the party’s only known entrance to the dungeon. Further assaults on the skull proved equally futile, and nearly as dangerous as the chapel guarding the skull collapsed, filling the chamber with immense boulders.

The party then turned their attention south to the cult’s first level headquarters. Inside, they found the ruined bodies of a dozen of the cult’s foot troops – all of whom had apparently been killed by a thousand fine slashes across their bodies. Further investigation by Kalib and another party member found the cause – some kind of creature feeding in one of the cult’s sleeping chambers. The party decided to withdraw, and attack the room from another angle. They quickly found Separious and the dead Nefar’s private chambers. Inside it they found a chest guarded with a crude lock, but a fine trap, which the party promptly triggered.

The resulting gas cloud killed Kalib outright, and forced the rest of the party to retreat. As the dust cloud cleared, the party triggered the ire of the creature in the northern room, which erupted through the leader’s room in a fury of blades. The creature – Separious’s first attempt at creating something worthy of Lewandrew – was known in life as Brant Bladescream, founder of the Blackrazor Guild. He had been abducted weeks before from the guild hall by Separious’s human henchmen, and transformed in Separious’s dungeon laboratories.

The final form of that transformation was a four-armed creature covered in thin, deadly blades that could slice through a body with a thought. The party, fighting a running retreat, managed to defeat the creature. Subsequent examination of the room found a number of magical items and treasure, including a scroll, several gems, and three potions. Unfortunately (for the party) one of the gems is booby-trapped to explode in one hour. And one of the potions is actually a deadly poison. After looting the treasure, the party began their return to the surface, only to find their only exit destroyed by the first earthquake triggered when they moved the crystal skull.
